St. Aloysius - Roller Banner RB768
Artwork by the
Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey.
Feast day: 21st June.
St. Aloysius
Gonzaga, Jesuit Priest, (1568-1591).
A contemporary
of St. Charles Borromeo (from whom he received his first communion) and St.
Robert Bellarmine who was his spiritual director.
He died as a
young man caring for plague victims. In 1729 Pope Benedict XIII declared him
patron saint of students and in 1926 Pope Pius XI named him patron of all
Christian youth. Because of the nature of his death, showing compassion and
courage in the face of an incurable disease, he is also regarded as patron of
AIDS sufferers and their careers.
He is pictured
with lilies showing his innocence and chastity.
