St. Charles Lwanga - Roller Banner RB994
Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
Charles Lwanga, Martyr.
Born in Buganda (modern Uganda) in1860 or 1865,
martyred June 3rd 1886.
Charles was a convert to Christianity and a page of
King Mwanga. Charles instructed the younger pages in the Catholic faith and
tried to safeguard the boys, aged about 13 to 30, from the King. He was
executed by being burned to death for refusing to renounce his faith during a
persecution of Catholics and Protestants by King Mwanga.
Charles is celebrated as a saint with his 22 Catholic companions, known
as the Martyrs of Uganda, on 3rd June. Although his Protestant companions could
not be canonised they were named together with the Catholics by Pope Paul VI as
enduring 'death for the name of Christ.'
