St. James & St. John - Banner BAN998
Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
James & John, Apostles.
They were the Sons of
Zebedee and Salome, she was also a follower of Jesus. Mark 3:17 indicates Jesus
called James and John the 'Sons of Thunder' because of their evangelical zeal.
James, John and Peter are
mentioned as witnessing the raising of Jairus' daughter, the Transfiguration
and the Agony in the Garden at Gethsemane.
James (the Great) is
believed to be the first Apostle to be martyred in 44AD, beheaded under Herod
Agrippa; he is pictured holding a sword to indicate this. Feastday 25th July.
John is referred to as
'the Beloved Disciple' present at all the significant points in Jesus'
ministry; he stood at the foot of the Cross and was one of the first
eye-witnesses, with Peter, to the resurrection. John wrote the fourth Gospel,
three Epistles and the Apocalypse (Revelation). His writings are profound and
focus on Jesus' divinity, glorious nature and the centrality of love to the
Christian message. Feastday 27th December
