St. Martin of Tours - Roller Banner RB1089
Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
Martin of Tours. Bishop.
Feast day: 11th November.
He lived between 316-387
A.D. having been born to pagan parents in a Roman province in modern day
Hungary; he served as a soldier.
He was baptised at around
the age of 18. Preferring to serve Christ rather than the army he was
eventually discharged and became a disciple of Hilary of Poitiers.
Martin established a
monastery in France eventually becoming a Bishop, he ministered to the poor and
preached throughout the countryside.
Tradition tells that Martin gave up half his
cloak to a naked beggar, that evening he dreamt that Christ himself was wearing
the cloak.
After his death he was a subject of devotion
by the faithful, one of the first saints to be so honoured despite the fact he
was not a martyr.
