SS. Peter and Paul, Apostles.
Feastday: SS. Peter and Paul 29th June.
Peter (born Simon),
brother of St. Andrew, both of whom were fishermen. Chosen by Jesus to be
the leader of the Twelve and later known as Prince of the Apostles.
Paul (born Saul)
persecuted Christians until he had a conversion experience on the road to
Damascus. He was instrumental in the spread of the Gospel beyond Israel and the
Jewish nation. He is called Apostle of the Gentiles
Both men were martyred in
Rome.
Peter, the first Pope, is
shown holding the keys of the kingdom (Matt 16:19).
Paul, who was both a Jew
and a Roman citizen, is shown holding a sword indicating his death by
beheading.
Jesus said, "I tell you, you
are Peter, (Gk. Petros), and on this rock I will build my church, and the
powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of
the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven,
and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.’" (Matt 16:19).
. . .God, who had set me apart before I was
born and called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me,
so that I might proclaim him among the Gentiles. . . (Paul to the Galatians 1:
15-16).
