Philip Howard 1557 - 1595 was an English nobleman, son of the Duke of
Norfolk and godson of Philip II King of Spain.
Feast Days: 19th October in Arundel and Brighton Diocese
4th May as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales.
After a frivolous youth at the court of Elizabeth I he witnessed a
debate on theology with Edmund Campion and Ralph Sherwin which inspired him to
reconcile with his wife and take his Catholic faith seriously.
He was arrested on charges of treason and spent 10 years in the Tower of
London where he died of dysentery. He was kept mostly in solitary
confinement fearing execution, although the charges were never proved and Queen
Elizabeth did not sign his execution warrant.
He requested permission, when dying, to see his wife and son whom he had never
met because of his incarceration. He was offered the opportunity if he
renounced this Catholicism to see them and have his titles and lands restored,
but he refused.
He died alone on 19th Oct 1595. He was canonised as one of the Forty
Martyrs of England and Wales by Pope Paul VI in 1970. He is one of the
patron saints of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton, England.
