Women at the Tomb - Banner
The artwork is by Sr Mary Stephen.
'At the first sight of dawn, they went to the
tomb.' Luke 24:1
'So they departed quickly from the tomb,
with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. And behold Jesus met
them...' (Matthew 28:8-9)
The gospel women were the first witnesses to the Resurrection, the ones who
drove them to visit the tomb where the Lord had been laid, at the crack of
dawn. Driven by their love, they found him.
These women, in the picture, represent
the different stages in the search. One of them is still searching, doubting,
needing to be convinced. She has to see for herself and is still trying to take
in the empty tomb. Another, only half comprehending, is running away in fear,
because of the enormity of what seems to have happened - something outside
human experience. The third has been stopped dead in her tracks as she
unexpectedly meets the Lord, and soon the others will turn to meet him.
Their love has been rewarded.
