St. Clare - Lectern Frontal LF741
Artwork
by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
Clare of Assisi, friend and follower of St. Francis
of Assisi. Founder and abbess of the Poor Clares under St. Francis' guidance.
Feast Day 11th August.
She and her fellow nuns led a very austere life,
true to the simple Fransciscan Gospel values of prayer, poverty and charity.
For the second half of her life she also coped with serious ill health. Her
advice and council was sought even by the Pope; because of her obvious humility
and holiness she was declared saint within two years of her death.
Her
deathbed words after 41 years of religious life at San Damiano are said to have
been:
“Go forth
in peace, for you have followed the good road. Go forth without fear, for he
who created you has made you holy, has always protected you, and loves you as a
mother. Blessed be you, my God, for having created me.”
