St. James the Great (Apostle) - Lectern frontal LF868
Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
Saint James,
Apostle.
Feast Day: 25th
July
Also known as
James the Greater to distinguish him from James the Less who was also an
Apostle.
James was the
brother of John the Apostle, they were the Sons of Zebedee and Salome, she was
also a follower of Jesus. Mark 3:17 indicates Jesus called James and John the
'Sons of Thunder' because of their evangelical zeal.
James, John and
Peter are mentioned as witnessing the raising of Jairus' daughter, the
Transfiguration and the Agony in the Garden at Gethsemane.
James is believed
to be the first Apostle to be martyred in 44AD, beheaded under Herod Agrippa;
he is pictured holding a sword to indicate this.
He is the patron saint of Spain and Portugal and
the shrine at Santiago (St James) de Compostela in northwest Spain remains
an important pilgrimage site.
