St. James the Less - Lectern Frontal LF869
Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
James The Less, Apostle.
He is celebrated with St Philip the Apostle on
their Feast Day of May 3rd.
Called 'the Less or Lesser' to distinguish him from
fellow Apostle James the Great, possibly indicating he was younger or shorter
than the latter.
Traditionally identified, although some scholars
disagree, as James the Son of Alpheus also 'brother of the Lord' and
Bishop of Jerusalem. He also wrote the epistle of James. Legend says he was martyred
by being stoned then clubbed to death.
