St. Joachim and Anne - Lectern Frontal LF989
Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
St Joachim &
St Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Feast Day: 26th
July.
Although there is
no scriptural evidence for their names Joachim and Anne have, by
tradition, been celebrated as the parents of Mary and the grandparents of
Jesus since the early centuries.
Their importance to the story of salvation can be
inferred despite the lack of scriptural evidence. Mary's life, and especially
her fiat when she accepted the Word of God at the Annunciation, demonstrate the
faith she must have witnessed in her formative family life. At the Incarnation
God became man and this is most clearly indicated by his human mother and
grandparents represented by Joachim and Anne.
Joachim and Anne are shown holding the infant Mary.
