St. Winifred - Lectern Frontal LF756
Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
Winifred.
Feast Day: 3rd November.
Born in Flintshire, Wales she joined a convent in
Denbighshire where she died in 650. Around the time her remains were
transferred and interred at the Benedictine Abbey in Shrewsbury in 1398 legends
about her life and death originated. One of these tells how a local chieftain
she refused to marry decapitated her and where her head rested the spring known
as Holywell originated. The legend continues that Winifred's uncle, St. Beuno,
restored her head and her life and she joined a convent.
The Holywell has continued as an unbroken shrine of
Christian pilgrimage, even though times of persecution, until the present day.
