The Binding of Isaac - Genesis 22:1-18.
Isaac carrying the wood for the
sacrifice is clearly an image of Jesus, carrying his cross.
The ram which Abraham found caught in a bush
saved Isaac's life. Thus the ram, in his turn, becomes an image of God who was
sacrificed in our stead, and when he rose again, secured our eternal life.
Abraham, as God promised, became the father of
a multitude of people, and Jesus became 'the first-born of a great family of
brothers and sisters' (Romans 8:29).
God's promise to Abraham was fulfilled for all peoples of all times in the
Paschal Mystery, and we, in turn, commemorate this at the Easter Vigil.
