American Baptist minister, civil rights
activist.
He is
regarded as one of the foremost campaigners for equal civil rights in US
history. He is particularly remembered for the persuasive and inspirational
nature of his oratory.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for combating
racial inequality through nonviolent resistance.
He was assassinated on the balcony of a Memphis
motel during a campaign visit.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a national US holiday
observed in his honour on the 3rd Monday of January.
