Paul, Apostle.
Paul (died c. 64/67, originally known as Saul) was
a Jew who was also a Roman citizen. He was a pharisee who persecuted
Christians until he had an conversion experience of the Risen Lord on
the road to Damascus. Although
not one of the original apostles who met Jesus, Paul is known as the
Apostle of the Gentiles. Realising that the message of Jesus was meant
for all, and not only those of jewish birth, he travelled to Greece, Malta, Italy and perhaps even Spain
evangelising and preaching the Good News. His letters and epistles in
the New Testament have shaped the christian message through the ages. He
was eventually put to death by the sword in Rome for proclaiming the
Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Original artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey.
For I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel that was proclaimed by me is not of human origin; for I did not receive it from a human source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. [Gal 1:11-12]
