St. Chad - Roller Banner RB781

Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey

Chad. Monk. Bishop

Feast days:
Memorial in England, according to the RC Calendar, Saints Chad and Cedd: 26th October.
The day of his death: 2nd March.
Translation of his relics to Birmingham Cathedral: 4th May.

634 - 672. Born in Northumbria he trained under St Aidan at Lindisfarne. He also spent several years in Ireland working with St Egbert until he was called back to replace his brother Cedd as Abbot of Lastingham, near Whitby, Yorkshire.

He was made Bishop of York a role which was later taken from him by Theodore, the newly arrived Archbishop of Canterbury. St Chad accepted this with humility which, together with his simplicity of life, so impressed Theodore that he later appointed him as Bishop of Mercia.

Chad moved the seat of Mercia to Lichfield where he founded a monastery and retreat house.  His dwelling was near a well where he baptised converts to Christianity. St Chad's Well, pictured in the artwork, is still a place of pilgrimage. St Chad is called 'the Apostle of the Midlands' for his work and evangelisation in this era.

The influence of the St Chad, who was revered as a saint in his own lifetime, is still evident in the many churches and schools named after him, particularly in the Diocese of Shrewsbury (which includes the old Diocese of Lichfield), and Archdiocese of Birmingham, which houses his remains in St. Chad's Cathedral.

St Chad's Gospel, a 7th Century manuscript, is preserved in Lichfield Cathedral library.
