There is only one priesthood and that is the Eternal High Priesthood of
Christ. All other priesthood is a sharing in the priesthood of Christ. All
other priesthood is a sharing in the priesthood of Christ. "Now Christ has
come, as high priest of all the blessings which were to come...He has entered
the sanctuary once and for all...having won an eternal redemption."
(Hebrew 9:11)
"He became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation,
and was acclaimed by God with the title of high priest, for ever of the order
of Melchizedek...the hope that brings us close to God." (Hebrews 5:9,10;
7:17,19b).
The primary role of a priest is to mediate between God and his creation
- to reveal God to the world and draw the world to God. In his lifetime Jesus
did this in many and varied ways, above all, and most mysteriously, in his
death and resurrection.
"Christ entered heaven itself, so that he now appears in the
presence of God on our behalf." (Hebrews 9:24)
In the Eucharist he left us with a powerful means of sharing in, and
continuing, his priestly activity in the heart of creation.
Christ is the supreme high priest but we, the 'People of God' are all
sharers in that priesthood. Listen to Peter talking to an ordinary group of
Christians,
"Set yourselves close to him so that you, too, may be living stones
making a spiritual house as a holy priesthood to offer spiritual
sacrifices..."(1 Peter 2:5)
Then, even more forcefully, "You are a chosen race, a kingdom of
priests, a holy nation, a people to be a personal possession, to sing the
praises of God, who call you out of darkness into his wonderful light." (1
Peter 2:9)
