Bartholomew, Apostle. Usually identified as being
the Apostle Nathanael recognised by Jesus as the friend of St. Philip
whom he had seen sitting under a fig tree (John 1:48-51). Traditionally
credited as spreading the Gospel to Arabia, India and Armenia where he
was martyred. Feast day 24th August.
The original artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey shows him sitting under a fig tree.
