Jean-Baptiste Vianney known as the Cure d'Ars was born in Lyon, France
in 1786 and died in Ars, France in 1859. He was renowned for his
pastoral care of all who sought him out: bishops, priests, laywomen and
laymen. During the last 10 years of his life he spent 16 - 18 hours a

Pope John Paul II said of him that he was a “rare example of a pastor acutely aware of his responsibilities…and a
sign of courage for those who today experience the grace of being
called to the priesthood.”
