St Laurence is known as the patron saint of archivists and librarians.
He has been one of the most honoured martyrs of the Roman Church since
the 4th century. Renowned for his alms giving he was one of the seven
deacons of Rome martyred circa 258AD during the persecution by the
Emperor Valerian. According to tradition, at his arrest, when ordered to
hand over the treasures of the Church, he pointed to a group of poor
people saying, "Here are the true treasures of the Church."
It is thought more likely that he was beheaded but a strong tradition
from the 4th century shows his emblem as a gridiron indicating his form
of execution; BAN879 indicates this with flames.
Original artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey.
