Ursula (and female companions), Martyr.

Feastday (pre-1969 calendar revision) 21st October.

Little factual information is known of this female martyr. She was probably a Romano- British saint of noble birth who, together with a number of other women in her entourage, was massacred in, or on the way to, Cologne.  A basilica in her honour was re-built in Cologne  around the 4th Century.

Ursula became representative of a leader of women and in 1535 St. Angela Merici founded the Order of the Ursulines in her honour, a community devoted to the education of young girls. Ursula is known as the patron saint of students.

Because of the scarcity of true facts about her when the calendar was revised in 1969 her feast was omitted.

Original artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey.
