St. Barbara - Banner BAN1056
Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
Barbara, Martyr. One of
the Fourteen Holy Helpers.
Barbara's name was known
in 7th century Rome and devotion to her can be traced to the 9th century.
Although the historic facts of her life are considered dubious she is
considered a saint by the Catholic Church. She is particularly honoured in the Eastern
Church.
According to tradition Barbara was the
daughter of a rich pagan who kept her locked up in a tower in order to preserve
her from the outside world. Having secretly become a Christian, she rejected an
offer of marriage arranged by her father. She was eventually murdered by her
father who was subsequently struck by lightning.
