St. Nicholas - Banner BAN751X
Artwork
by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
Nicholas, Bishop. Feastday 6th December.
Born in the 4th Century in Turkey (Asia
Minor) he became Bishop of Myra and is honoured in both the Western and Eastern
churches. As early as the 6th Century a church was built in his honour in
Constantinople. Although little historical evidence is known of him he was
loved for his generosity which gave rise to the custom of gift giving in
December associated with him, hence the name Santa Claus for Saint Nicholas.
He is also associated with saving
sailors from a violent shipwreck during a storm in the Mediterranean and this
is the image portrayed on the banner. He is known as the patron saint of
sailors and children.
