First martyr of England (Protomartyr) killed
in Verulanium now St. Albans, Hertfordshire where a Cathedral, Abbey Church was
built in his honour. Mentioned by St Bede in his Ecciesiastical History
c.731, he was thought to be a convert to Christianity who died protecting a
priest.
Alban is pictured holding a cross and a palm
branch indicating martyrdom.
