St. Anthony - Banner BAN735
Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
Feast Day: 13th June.
Anthony of Padua (Anthony of Lisbon),
Preacher. Priest and Doctor of the Church.
Anthony,
who was a member of St Francis' Order of Friars Minor, was renowned for his
simple and persuasive preaching of the Gospel. Here he is shown preaching on
the shore at Rimini. The story told in Little Flowers of St. Francis (14th Century) describes how Anthony,
frustrated by the hard-heartedness of his human listeners, went to the shore to
describe the blessings God bestows on his creation, even on the fish of the
ocean
"Listen to the word of God, O ye
fishes of the sea and of the river, seeing that the faithless heretics refuse
to do so." The townsfolk seeing & hearing his words were filled with joy and
believed the good news he proclaimed.
