Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
St. Augustine of Hippo,
Bishop and Doctor of the Church.
Feast Day: 28th August.
Together with Ambrose, Gregory the Great and
Jerome he is one of the four key Doctors (from the Latin docere,
to teach or instruct) of the Western Church. He wrote many influential
books on doctrine, theology, religious philosophy and spirituality.
Born in Algeria in 354
after a profligate earlier life he was a convert to Christianity at 33,
baptised by St. Ambrose in Milan. He became Bishop of Hippo (Annaba, Algeria)
at 41. Augustine was remarkable for his energy and passion. His
autobiographical work, in a series of books known as The Confessions of
St. Augustine, has served as a model of the Christian life for over 1600
years. He and his clergy led a monastic style community life which gave rise to
the 'Rule of St. Augustine'. He died in 430.
