Saint Basil the Great. Bishop and Doctor of
the Church.
Feast day in RC calendar 2nd January shared with St. Gregory Nazianzen.
Patron Saint of Russia.
Born in Caesarea (now southeastern Turkey) c.
330. For many years he lived a monastic vocation and his importance to monks of
the Eastern tradition matches that of St. Benedict to those of the West.
He became Bishop of Caesarea and was a
stalwart defender of the doctrine of the Incarnation of Christ, defending the
Church from the Arian heresy which denied Christ's divinity. He also
contributed to the doctrine of the Trinity.
He had great skills as a theologian, orator
and liturgist and his pastoral care of his flock inspired him to build a
hospital known as a great wonder of the world at the time. He died c. 379 and
is named as a Doctor of he Church. Known as one of the Cappadocian Fathers with
SS. Gregory Nazianzen and Gregory of Nyssa (Basil's brother).
