St. Catherine of Siena - Banner BAN762
Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
Catherine of Siena, Doctor of the
Church, Patron of Europe, Dominican Tertiary.
Feast Day: 29th April.
Born in Siena in 1347 she died at thirty
three years of age in Rome. She was intelligent, cheerful and single-minded.
Through her deep meditation and prayer she experienced mystical revelations of
heaven, hell and purgatory. After these she felt called by God to participate
actively in public life. She persuaded Pope Gregory XI to return to Rome and
worked to reform and unite the Catholic Church at a time of schism. She also
continued to serve the destitute and sick. Her written works and letters, which
include The Dialogue on Divine Providence, are considered classics
of both the Italian language and Christian Spirituality. She was named a Doctor
of the Church for her teachings in 1970 and Patron of Europe in 1999.
