St. Christopher - Banner BAN763
Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
Christopher (from the Greek meaning
Christ - bearer), Martyr of the third Century. Traditionally portrayed carrying
the Christ-Child. Feast Day (where celebrated locally in the West) 25th July.
Little is known of the true identity or
life of the martyr, the spiritual sense of him 'carrying Christ in his heart
and bearing great trials for the faith' gave rise over the following eight
centuries to the popular idea of him physically bearing the Christ-Child safely
across a torrential stream. This cemented his role as the patron of safe
travel.
