St. David - Banner BAN713
Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
David, Bishop. Patron
Saint of Wales.
David (Dewi) is believed to have been born in
South Wales towards the end of the 6th Century. Tradition attributes the
foundation of ten monasteries to him, the most important being Menevia in
Dyfed.
These communities were noted for the austerity and prayer practised by
the monks, in accord with that of the Egyptian hermits. By the 12th Century
pilgrims journeyed to his shrine at Menevia.
He was noted for his persuasive eloquence and it is said that at the church
synod in Cardigan which elected him head of the Welsh Church a white dove
descended on his shoulder as he preached.
His last recorded words were said to
be:
“Be joyful brothers, and sisters. Keep your faith and do the little things that
you have seen and heard with me.”
