St. Thomas Becket - Banner BAN988
Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
Thomas, Bishop and Martyr (1118 - 1170).
Also known as Saint Thomas of Canterbury (See BAN988B & BAN988B).

Born a Londoner, he rose to be
Chancellor of England under Henry II and later Archbishop of Canterbury. This
consecration initiated a religious conversion in Thomas. Disputes with Henry II
led him to exile in France for seven years. He returned to Canterbury to an
uncertain future and was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral 29th December 1170,
he was declared a saint just three years later.
He is honoured as patron of pastoral
