Civil rights activist.
By refusing to give
up her seat to a white man on a bus in 1955 she was arrested and convicted of
violating Montgomery (Alabama) race segregation laws.
The ensuing bus
boycott, anti segregation protests and court rulings were important landmarks
in the campaign for equal rights.
Rosa was awarded the
Congressional Gold Medal in 1999 inscribed with the words: "Mother of the
Modern Day Civil Rights Movement."
